Police say 27-year-old Richard Sarpong was supposed to be watching his 86-year-old client, but he was having sex with a prostitute instead. West Hartford police say a neighbor saw a car parked near Belmont and Glenwood Road around 9 p.m. Thursday, and thought it looked suspicious. Police questioned the driver, 30-year-old John Erdman, who told officers he was waiting for a friend. That’s when police say 26-year-old Raechelle Carmona started walking down the street from a few doors down, the home where she allegedly had sex with Sarpong for money. His client was upstairs sleeping during the entire ordeal. “I couldn’t believe it happened here; it’s so quiet all the time, nothing really happens,” said West Hartford neighbor Carl Merz. “It’s hard to know who to trust anymore. It’s hard to trust anybody.” “The caregiver is a Connecticut CNA in good standing that received favorable reports from the family he served,” said David Devnir, a spokesperson for Companions and Homemakers, Inc., Sarpong’s employer. “The allegations represent a substantial mistake in judgment if proven. All caregivers are subjected to a criminal background check in compliance with Connecticut law. We contract with a professional consumer reporting agency to conduct and provide a comprehensive background report. This caregiver had no criminal record.” Devnir says Sarpong will not be getting any more assignments until the investigation is complete. Sarpong was arrested for patronizing a prostitute. Carmona is charged with prostitution as well as failure to appear for a warrant out of Cromwell. Erdman is charged with promoting prostitution. According to police, Erdman was going to a cut of the money from Carmona in exchange for driving her to the residence. Experts from Allied Community Resources say when hiring a home aide, do your homework. They recommend you inquire about their experience, learn about their history, and get references.
