General Muhammadu Buhari, who is contesting for the presidential seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has spoken about his views on the delayed polls, the Boko Haram insurgency, and problems facing Nigeria, in an interview with Al-Jazeera.
General Buhari has spoken about the situation with the postponement of elections, saying that his party and it’s supporters will abide by the law.
On election postponement Buhari said: “There is no need for it [election postponement] if the same military cannot secure 14 local governments out of 774 in six years, how can we be sure that they can secure the 14 local governments in six weeks?”
“I believe Nigerians are grateful to our neighbors that have eventually agreed to come and salvage our country for us for good neighborliness so that they too are not threatened by the instability from Nigeria, but the bottomline as far as Nigerians are concerned is the massive corruption in government: where is the vote for weapons for the military, for the police? Where is the money going into?”
General Buhari also added that his campaign have to afford six-week shift, because appropriate constitutional authority was quoted that after 30 days to the election, dates can be adjusted, so that gives it whatever plausible credibility they need (INEC), adding “we are going to appeal t our supporters to give INEC the chance and reach the maximum allowed by the constitution – that 30 days to the swearing in of the new government, elections must be conducted.”
APC presidential candidate also hoped that the military and INEC and the ruling party would accept that new date of vote is the limit.
Geberal Buhari continued about the fight against Boko Haram: “Well the government is not prepared to fight Boko Haram. I made a statement earlier on which some of the Nigerian press published: the troops deployed in Ekiti state (where we believe we were rigged out), if deployed in the north-east, they could at least have rescued our over 220 girls which were removed by the rebels. They know where they are and whether they have the capacity to rescue them or not, they still can’t give a cohesive reason why the Nigerian government was unable to rescue the girls from the insurgents.”
Also, in the 25-minute-long video he gives the reasons why the Nigerian government is unable stop the Boko Haram insurgency. The APC presidential candidate accused the federal government of not properly protecting Nigerians.
He said: “I have no evidence that the government is encouraging it, but the government has failed to do its principled duty of protecting life and property of all beings inside his territory in Nigeria.”
Gen Buhari said he will investigate why the Nigerian military have been so undermined by Jonathan’s government, if he wins the election.
He also mentioned that the efforts of the present Jonathan-led administration are not good enough on the Chibok girls’ abduction. Buhari wonders why Jonathan’s government is yet to come out and explain why the abducted Chibok girls have not been rescued.
Gen Buhari repeatedly emphasises that the APC will ask its supporters to remain calm and peaceful.
